This is Jessie Knights studio in Portsmouth, not sure of date, but according to Joe Cleverly she was in Portsmouth during the mid 1950’s
Anyone in Portsmouth know the address for this shop?

Hi.
I know this studio but I can’t remember the address, it was up the road from the Vanity Fair Restaurant on the high street.(That was in the 50’s of course).
I am Jessie Knight’s niece.
Would you like to know more?
Regards
Petula

Hi Petula,
Any info that you would like to pass on would be greatly appreciated.
I know that Jessie worked in a shop in Portsmouth near the Union Jack Club in Portsmouth, Joe Cleverley told me this some time ago.
Thanks
Lionel

Hi Lionel - I have a flyer stating that Jessie worked in Charlotte Street - The flyer does’t say whether this was in Portsmouth though - but it was printed (the flyer) in Southsea - which is just up the road from Pompey - So it could well have been for her Portsmouth shop - Also check out Sean Zeeks my space site - he has a very nice picture of Jessie and some nice shots of Jack and Jock that are well worth seeing - as well as other bits and bobs.

Hi Paul,
Would it be possible for me to have a copy of the flyer of Aunt Jess.
I am her niece and I am trying to find out as much as I can. Charlotte Street rings a bell with me but but so does Commercil Road, and Pompey.
I was only young but I used to spend many hours watching Aunt Jess do her tattooing. I used tostay with her during the school holidays. I was about 5 years old. I remember it as if it was yesterday.
Kind Regards
Petula.

I’m trying to find out how I can get more information on Jessie Knight the female tattoo artist from the sixties in Portsmouth England? I served in the Canadian Navy on board HMCS Provider and in 1965 Jessie had a studio that we (Canadian) called the Hole in the Wall. She did a tattoo of an Eagle on my chest in November 1965. I still have it on my chest to this day (French Humor) Thanking anyone in advance who can help me out. Thank You Richard Parent Cobble Hill British Columbia, Canada

I interviewed Jessie a few years ago, have several hours of
filmed content. I shall be releasing a documentary on Tattooing
very soon. Also have interviews Jock of Kings Cross and many
others.

I’d like to know how I can reply to the various “E” mails concerning Jessie Knight the tatoo lady of Portsmouth,England. Her bio says she quit tatooing in 1963 but like I said before I knew her in 1965 and she was still doing her art work on bodies and she had a really steady hand for tatooing. Before she did my eagle on my chest in 1965 she lit a match and showed my the flame and I asked her why she was doing this and she told me I do this to show you that I have a steady hand even at my age. She never used a plastic format like they did in Canada because the tatoo on my chest was done free hand which is quite amazing. I thank you all in advance for letting me tell a little bit about Jesse Knight and the pleasure it gave me to have known her.

wow, never knew all this existed - haven’t searched for a while, jessie knight was my great great aunt, my family still owns the ‘trunk’ belonging to jessie and her dad containing their drawings and machines etc, i have some family photos and her hand written life story, a few poems etc
Thank-you all for all this ‘extra’ information on jess, i only knew her as an old lady when i was a little girl, apart from what i know from research.
Will Scally - i would die to see that filmed interview
Petula - how are we related?? my grandfather was jessie’s nephew, son of leonard collison knight (named after their father, who taught jessie to tattoo in aldershot)
